The Holy Father:

Pope Benedict XVI

On Tuesday, April 19th, 2005, German Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger became the 265th Pope.  Cardinal Ratzinger, who was born on April 16, 1927, at age 78, becomes the oldest elected Pope since Pope Clement XII in 1730 and the first German Pope since Pope Victor II in 1055.  His Holiness Pope Benedict XVI, which is Latin for "blessing" is the name chosen by Ratzinger, perhaps in an effort to bridge the growing divisive gap in the Roman Catholic community.

Pope John Paul II

Ratzinger became Pope after the passing of his Holy Father, Karol Jozef (Joseph) Wojtyla the 264th Pope, better known as Pope John Paul II.  Who died at 2137 hours on Saturday, April 2nd, 2005 at the age of 84 after having been the Pope for 26 years, and the first non-Italian Pope in 455 years.  For more information, please visit The Holy See, the official Vatican City web site.
